It’s allergy season and those among us with more sensitive noses are reaching for our tissues and antihistamines. But can allergies affect our pets as well? And how do we recognize an allergic reaction in our furry friends?
Itchiness, scratchiness and chewiness tend to be the main symptoms. And most of our pet’s allergies aren’t caused by pollen or grass, it’s actually food! Certain proteins can cause allergic reactions in some animals.
Chicken is a common culprit – just because it’s a common ingredient in a lot of pet food, doesn’t mean a lot of our animals aren’t allergic to it!
The best way to counter this is the so-called ”food trial”. If you think your furry friend is having a bad reaction to the food you’re using, swap it for one using another protein! For example, if you’re feeding chicken now and your pet starts getting uncharacteristically itchy, swap it for beef and see if that works!
Experts advise that when buying new food for a trial, it’s always recommended to read the labels carefully. Make sure the protein you’re trying to avoid isn’t on the ingredients list at all, in any shape or form.
Also, when doing a food trial, make sure to avoid human food – it can confuse your pet’s belly!
When wondering whether to start a trial, make sure to avoid DIY. Always consult with an expert before changing your pets’ diet.
