Why do dognappers take dogs? They want to make some quick money so they steal dogs and sell them for ransom, others go online to sell them, and some use our dogs for dogfighting rings.
Fortunately, there’s a bunch of things you can do to protect your dog from dognappers. Here’s Part 1, in case you missed it.
1. If a stranger asks you too many questions about your dog, including where you got them from, their breed and if you paid anything, stay alert. If possible, report them if they sound too suspicious. If a stranger tells you how cute your dog is, they’re okay. No personal questions, remember.
2. If you spot a dog for sale online, be wary and don’t encourage the seller by purchasing them online. These dogs are usually stolen so the right thing to do is report these sellers, ask authorities to check for a microchip on the dog and reunite the dog with their family.
3. Even if you spot a dog for sale in newspapers, do the same thing as you would do when you see a dog for sale online. Dognappers have to be stopped and the only way to do that is to get them caught.
4. Spay or neuter your dogs to prevent breeding. Illegal breeders look for dogs, steal them and force them to breed. This would not be possible if your dogs are spayed or neutered.
5. If you see any suspicious people or cars in a neighborhood of dogs, report them immediately. Dognappers, in the past, have posed as animal control officers and stolen many dogs in Illinois. Report suspicious people and cars to your local authority.
