The colder months are upon us. Here are 15 tips to make sure your dog gets the winter care they need!
- Invest in warm and cozy bedding so that your dog sleeps warmly, not on the cold floor.
- Keep your dog’s skin and fur well-moisturized with the use of supplements, coconut oil, or fish oil. Do the same for the tail, paws, or ears.
- Maintain a good grooming schedule. Your dog needs a neat coat for the best insulation.
- Clear away snow from high areas that may fall on your dog, and clear away snow next to fences that serve as climbing or escape points.
- Do not leave your dog alone in a car; temperatures can drop dangerously low very quickly.
- Keep an eye on the temperature and know when it is too cold for a dog to be outside.
- Let your dog stay indoors most of the time.
- Don’t overfeed your dog!
- Make sure your dog doesn’t get to any antifreeze.
- Prioritize paw care – trim excess fur, moisturize to prevent cracking, and let them wear booties to avoid frostbite.
- When it’s a bit warmer and the sun is out, let your dog outside.
- Make sure your dog doesn’t burn themselves on a heater.
- Maintain your dog’s hydration levels.
- Don’t let your dog play on frozen ponds; the ice may be thinner than you know.
- If your dog is a senior, provide extra care.
