3 Signs Your Dogs Are Not Getting Enough Exercise

Approximately 50% of all dogs are overweight – and many of their owners don’t even realize it. Just a couple of extra pounds can lead to severely increased disease risk.

Is your dog overweight? Run your hands along their sides. Can you feel their ribs – each individual one – without too much trouble? If so, they’re fine. If not, then they likely have some extra chubbiness they could stand to lose.

A lack of exercise is the most common cause of excess weight in dogs. Fit dogs will be happy and satisfied, with clear muscle tone, a shiny coat of fur, and an easily visible waistline. They will have no trouble doing exercise and it won’t ruin the rest of their day.

If your dog is not getting enough exercise, they may:

Have Little To No Stamina

If your dog gets exhausted after just 15 minutes of walking, they’re likely quite out of shape. Even older dogs should be able to walk for that short amount of time without needing a break.

They Have Destructive Behavior

Dogs who exercise enough have burned off excess energy. Those who don’t get enough exercise tend to have too much energy and restlessness, leading to destructive behavior.

They Don’t Obey You

If your dog has stopped listening to commands, they may be lacking exercise and therefore losing interest in activities, as they have no incentive to not continue doing what they want on their own.
