The smell of trash – and the knowledge that there could be food in there – is enough to make many dogs scramble for some.
But the mess isn’t the only thing you have to worry about when you come home to find the can knocked over and trash strewn everywhere. The combination of spoiled or toxic human foods, chemical-based waste, and other unmentionables can make your dog sick or even cause intestinal blockage.
Here are 3 ways you can prevent your dog from going through your trash:
Keep The Trash Can Away From A Paw’s Reach
Put your trash can somewhere that your dog can’t possibly get to while you’re away. This can be as simple as putting it in a locked cabinet, in a closet, in the garage, next to the terrifying vacuum cleaner, in a room your dog can’t access – whatever works!
Get A Dog-Safe Trash Can
There aren’t many trash cans specifically made to keep dogs out, but there are many ordinary ones that can do the trick. Get cans that are too tall, too heavy, or come with a lockable lid that your dog can’t open.
Use Safety Locks
If you truly want an easy way to just keep the trash can inaccessible, use a safety lock, such as one for children. For especially devious dogs, you can even opt for two – one on either side. These types of locks are pretty easy to use; they open with a latch most adults can operate.
