5 Of The Most Common Skin Allergies That Afflict Our Dogs

There are a variety of skin conditions that can afflict our canine friends. Here are five of the most common:

1. Allergies

Allergies are triggered due to a hypersensitive reaction to three general factors: environment, fleas, and food.

Atopic dermatitis in dogs is an extreme reaction to commonplace substances in the environment such as grass, pollen, or spores. Absorbed directly through the skin or inhaled, canine atopy may require regular medication during allergy season.

For dogs with a hypersensitivity to fleas, a single bite can cause serious skin irritation, leading to itching and scratching. Keeping fleas under control requires treatment of all household pets, including the environment.

Though less common, food allergies resulting in skin problems do exist, and are diagnosed by a veterinarian using a strict elimination diet until the allergen is identified.

2. Diseases

Some canine skin conditions are caused by autoimmune diseases such as lupus, hormone imbalances such as hypothyroidism, lesions, or cancer. A visit to a veterinarian is a must for proper diagnosis and treatment.

3. Infections

Certain infections due to bacteria or secondary factors can also cause skin problems in dogs and should be evaluated by a veterinarian, who may recommend treatment specific to the condition.

4. Parasites

Parasites such as fleas, mites, and worms embed on canine skin and can cause much discomfort and distress. Management of parasites can be a challenge which requires pet and environment treatment.

5. Shedding

Excessive hair fall with obvious areas of baldness can indicate internal health issues such as hormone imbalances or metabolic changes. Your dog’s veterinarian can determine the cause and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Keeping your dog’s coat well groomed helps maintain its overall appearance and health.
