Some dog breeds naturally drool more than others. Dog breeds such as English Bulldogs, Saint Bernards, and Bullmastiffs easily come to mind as examples of dog breeds that drool more.
However, if your dog suddenly starts drooling more than usual, it could signify that something else is going on. The following are some common reasons why dogs drool:
Hunger And Excitement
Most dogs drool when hungry or excited. Some may drool more than others due to the formation of their mouth.
Dental Issues
Broken teeth, infected teeth, excessive tartar, and gingivitis are dental issues that can cause your dog to drool.
Heat Stroke
Dogs pant and drool to cool down when they get too hot.
Foreign Bodies
A common scenario is when a dog has a piece of stick, or bone stuck between their teeth. Sometimes, foreign bodies may get lodged under their tongue, too.
Toxins
Dogs love exploring with their mouth and may eat or lick something toxic. Drooling could signify that your dog ate something they shouldn’t, and usually, other signs may accompany it.
Your dog may be drooling unusually due to a harmless reason. However, you shouldn’t rule out that it could be a sign that something is wrong. So, schedule an appointment with your vet and have your dog checked out.
