5 Things To Keep In Mind To Protect Your Dogs During Hurricane Season

Life can be unpredictable and nothing more so than the weather. Fortunately, with today’s technology, we are able to detect looming bad weather and even extreme events that could have devastating circumstances, such as cyclones, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

Being forewarned means we are forearmed and so we are able to, even if hurriedly, grab essentials such as food and clothing before disaster strikes. People who live in hurricane-prone countries have even adapted to this lifestyle by constructing safe-rooms underground where they can seek shelter until the storm has passed.

Taking care of ourselves is of course paramount but considering the safety and well-being of our canine companions is also vital. Here are some points to consider:

  • Ensure you have your dog’s necessities on hand. This means food for a few days at least, a bowl, water, and medications if applicable. A first-aid kit could also come in handy, but you’ll probably have one for the family anyway which can be used if necessary.
  • Make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.
  • Locate potential places of safety for your dog so that you have an option if you’re unable to take care of him.
  • Have your dog microchipped and let him wear a collar with his name and a contact number on it. This could save hours of heartache if he goes missing.
  • If your dog is small to medium size, then consider familiarising him with a doggy carrier. This will make it easier to transport him if necessary.
