If there’s one thing many pups love, it’s car rides! And road trips? Even better!
As excited as you may be to take your fur ball along with you in your car for a vacation, it’s important to remember that their safety is very important! Here are five tips for going on road trips with pups.
1. Buckle up!
Contrary to popular belief, most car harnesses for pups don’t actually protect fur balls during sudden stops or accidents. Currently, the only pet carriers and harnesses made for car safety are made by Sleepypod, so you might want to invest in those! Keep in mind that travelling with a pup who isn’t properly restrained can get you a hefty a fine and rack up demerit points in many states.
2. Keep cool!
Cars heat up very quickly in hot weather, and temperatures can climb to fatal degrees rapidly when a car is parked – even if the windows are down and you’re in the shade. Pups can’t sweat and therefore have no way of keeping themselves cool other than panting, which uses up energy and can just make his internal temperature even hotter! Instead of leaving him in the car, tie your pup up in a shady area, and don’t forget to bring lots of water so you cool him off quickly if needed.
3. Crate train!
Make sure your pup is used to and happy with being in a crate before you leave. This is a great way to help a fur ball feel secure and safe, and have a sort of home away from home. It’s also useful to keep your fur ball in a crate in case you have to stop over at a hotel.
4. Parasite control!
Different areas of the world have different types of parasites, so do your research and prepare in advance, and bring along whatever medications or sprays you need. It’s always a good idea to have a pup check-up with a vet before leaving to top up current parasite control as well.
5. Bust boredom!
Car rides might be exciting for pups, but hours upon hours of it can get pretty boring. Bring along some toys so your fur ball stays occupied and make sure to take regular stops along the way so your pup can stretch his legs on a little walk. He’s sure to thank you!
Now that you know all you need to, you’re ready to hit the road with your fur ball. Have fun! Don’t forget to like and share this if you found it useful!
