As dog parents, we know that dogs are very, very sensitive, especially to our emotions. A dog’s love for us is unconditional, unending and undeniable, and this is one of the many reasons why we love them so so much! So it’s natural that when we’re going through hard times, our dogs feel it too.
If you are going through stress, your dog goes through it too. During a break-up, we tend to explode with negative energy and feelings because of all the arguments and disagreements, and this negativity filters down to our dogs. Here are some ways to reduce your dog’s stress when going through a break-up.
1. Give your dog some privacy
When you’re having an argument, close the door behind you so that the negativity from your situation doesn’t seep down to your dog. If possible, fight away from home, perhaps in a friend’s home, if possible. Your dog doesn’t deserve all that negativity, which will only stress him out.
2. Give your dog a break
If your breakup requires that you move out, but you still have the time, make sure the transition is slow and doesn’t stress your dog out. Before moving out, take your dog to the new house to get him accustomed to the new surrounding and on moving day, ask a friend to look after him so you can handle the chaos that comes with moving in and bring your dog home after everything is in place.
3. Plan visits and treat your dog
Dogs know what it is like to be abandoned, they know that feeling. When your ex visits your dog and leaves, treat your dog so that your dog doesn’t associate goodbye with sadness.
