7 Common Household Plants That Can Harm Your Dog's Health

There are lots of plants out there that are safe to have in the house with dogs around. These seven, however, are not. Here are some toxic plants to keep your dog away from.

Aloe Vera

This very useful plant is known for being an excellent soother – but that’s just for humans. It can be toxic to dogs who eat it, leading to anorexia, tremors, diarrhea, vomiting, and depression.

Apples

Apples themselves are okay, but the seeds, stems, and leaves of them are toxic. They have cyanide in them and can lead to breathing difficulty, panting, pupil dilation, and shock.

Devil’s Ivy

Known also as Pothos Ivy, this plant is great for cleaning air but causes irritation to dogs when ingested, leading to throat and mouth swelling, stomach pain, choking, drooling, and breathing trouble.

Rhubarb

This common pie ingredient has calcium oxalate, which, in dogs, can lead to salvation, tremors, spasms, seizures, swelling, pain, and kidney failure.

Philodendron

This house plant is often used for decor, but it also has calcium oxalate and therefore has the same effect as rhubarb.

Azalea

Also known as rhododendron, this plant is extremely toxic and can cause cardiac and skeletal trouble to dogs. It is highly dangerous and may cause diarrhea, vomiting, hypotension, weakness, and cardiovascular problems.

Tomato plants

Tomatoes themselves are fine, but the stem and leaves of this plant can cause digestive trouble for dogs. Confusion, weakness, diarrhea, and drowsiness can ensue.
