If you have seen your dog pacing around your home while panting, you may wonder why they are doing it. Usually, dogs pace and pant when they are somewhat uncomfortable with their environment.
However, in some cases, it could be something more serious that requires visiting your vet. Several things can cause restlessness in dogs. The most common reasons include:
Exercise
Dogs often pant after vigorous activities, similar to how we winded after strenuous exercise.
Anxiety
Dogs experience anxiety, especially when a normal routine or environment changes. When dogs struggle with anxiety, they pant and pace.
Nerves
Some dogs will pace, pant, shake, whine, and exhibit other behaviors when nervous about their environment or upcoming events.
Heat Exhaustion
Dogs don’t sweat. As a result, panting and pacing are ways by which they can regulate their body temperature whenever they are experiencing heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Injury
Dogs become restless after suffering bodily injury. It could also signify that something stuck in their paw pad is causing discomfort.
Respiratory Issues
Usually, when dogs suffer from respiratory illness, they pace, pant, and become restless.
Pains
Back pain, joint pain, abdominal pain, and other pains can be excruciating for dogs and cause them to be restless.
Usually, pacing, panting, and restlessness are not a cause for concern in dogs. However, if your dog appears more restless than normal, it would be best to call your vet immediately.
