Some dogs are content within the confines of home. Others are endless adventurers and intrepid explorers who would rather escape to freedom than be contained.
So, why and how do dogs escape? First, determine the cause. Is your dog bored or restless from lack of exercise or stimulation? Then, discover their escape methods, and apply these eight tips to prevent your clever canine from breaking free:
- Supervision. Do not allow serial and serious escape artists outside without supervision.
- Secure Gate Locks. Ensure that the locks that secure your gates are canine proof.
- Blocked View. If your existing fence allows visibility and causes your dog to bark excitedly at or chase wildly after animals and people he sees, consider replacing it with an economical alternative that blocks his view of temptations on the other side.
- Fenced Alone. Move everything away from the fence that your dog can use as a springboard to freedom.
- Redundant Fence. A fence within a fence serves as an additional deterrent for athletic escape artists.
- Tilted Fence Extenders. These portions of fence are fastened to the existing structure and tilt 45 degrees inward to make climbing and jumping more difficult.
- L-Footer. This wire fencing is designed to fit snugly at the base of the fence with a 90-degree bend to prevent dogs from digging their way out.
- Strategic Landscaping. Choose dense plants that increase the distance from your fence and serve as an effective buffer for your adventurous dog.
