Does your dog like to swim? Here are 9 tips for keeping them safe!
- Teach Your Dog Slowly. A dog can be very nervous in water at first, so don’t rush them or push them.
- Don’t Let Them Drink What They Swim In. Oceans and seas are full of nasty bacteria, and pool water has loads of chlorine.
- Ask A Vet About Preventative Care. Dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors may need certain vaccinations or preventative care options.
- Beware Blue-Green Algae. This alga is known as cyanobacteria and is found clustered in bodies of freshwater. It’s very toxic to dogs and humans!
- Don’t Assume They Can Swim. Yes, many dogs have the natural instinct needed to paddle around, but that doesn’t equate to a safe swim.
- Monitor Your Dog After A Swim. Dogs can contract all sorts of diseases and illnesses from open bodies of water. Take note of any symptoms of a health problem.
- Use A Life Vest. Even experienced swimmers can benefit from the added safety of a life vest.
- Wash After A Swim. Give your dog a wash once they’re done swimming to get rid of the bad bacteria and microorganisms that may have latched on.
- Keep An Eye Out For Beach Closure Notifications. Beaches are often closed due to a high level of bacteria or other issues that make them unsafe.
