Dogs can be great companions for everyone, but studies show that gender might influence your decision to get a dog as your companion.
According to a national poll surveying 600 single men and women, women were more likely to respond that they prefer dogs as companions, as opposed to men. They also noted that dogs are very affectionate, reliable, and easy-going and that they give them a sense of security.
When men explain why they have a dog, their motivation seems to be a little different. Men don’t get them because they want a reliable companion. Instead, they are interested in getting dogs because they want to be able to freely show their affection without being judged. They seem just as open by women to pet their dogs, hold them in their lap, and give them kisses.
Dogs also seem to have preferences towards hanging out with adults, especially women. But this is also related to how they were socialized as puppies, and it seems like women take are the ones that usually care for dogs in the household. Women also appear gentler, whereas men can be intimidating, or even threatening. This can also happen with kids; the less used dogs are to people, the more likely they are to be threatened by overactive kids. So, it’s best to try and socialize your dog from a young age to make sure they get along with everyone they meet.
Even though women are more attracted to the idea of adopting a dog, that doesn’t have to be the rule of thumb. Everyone should be encouraged to look into adoption, no matter their gender.
