After Being Stranded For Days, Dog Finally Rescued From Freezing Detroit River

With the midwestern winter coming to a close, temperatures and snowfall are still hitting these states. In Michigan, winters are cold and snowy, forcing people and their dogs to spend a lot of time indoors.

For others, this isn’t always the case. Fonzi, a small dog who got stranded in the Detroit river, survived what many wouldn’t. Patricia, who was the vet taking care of Fonzi after this long swim, said that this is an amazing story of survival. She said that Fonzi most likely got chased out of the property by a coyote, and made a run for the river. Onlookers figured that he wouldn’t make it, and after the first night away from home, many thought the coyote had eaten him.

In the day after, temperatures dropped down to single digits. Due to this, no one was able to go out and look for him, because it was far too cold. A few days later, some helpful folks found Fonzi and brought him into the shelter. It had been four days since he was chased away, and Patricia couldn’t believe her eyes when an anonymous rescuer brought him back in. Even though this was great news, Patricia knew that Fonzi wasn’t in the clear yet.

The night that he was returned, he wasn’t in good condition. The shelter’s crew said that he would have to stay in the hospital for 5 days because of how severe of conditions he was in for a long period of time. A few days after, the Woodhaven Animal Hospital took a video and posted it, showing Fonzi’s progress. He is said to be doing well, after spending four nights in the river.
