Animal Shelters Are Being Overwhelmed With Displaced Pets From Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey has come and gone, the rain has stopped, but the devastation is still very real. CNN reports that tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed and the loss of life is still uncertain.

Sadly, we went through this very thing in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina slammed into Louisiana and Alabama (also Cuba and the Bahamas). Just like back in 2005, many animals have lost their families and their homes. The Fort Bend County Animal Shelter helped many animals evacuate, and happily, on September they reopened their doors!

If you have lost your pet, please visit Fort Bend County’s Facebook page of www.fortbendcountypets.com to see if your pet is safe in their hands! In the coming days, it is likely that more pets will be coming to the shelter, so keep checking back. The shelter is reaching out for donations.

They need items to keep all the rescued animals safe, dry and fed. The items they are requesting are food bowls, cat litter, flea and tick prevention for both cats and dogs, wire crates, and dog food. The Sugar Land animal shelter is taking in all strays found there – please call 281.275.2842.

There is also the chance that your pet could be safe at one of the many temporary shelters in Sugar Land. Many pets will need foster homes until their parents can be found – again call the number above if you can help. The Sugar Land Animal Shelter is looking for volunteers at their shelter if you can help, apply here. Share this with everyone you know.
