You would think that the taste of pet food would be tailored to each individual species. If you’ve ever kept both a cat and a dog in the same house, this will certainly appear to not be the case! Bottomless stomachs aside, just why are dogs so willing to go after cat food?
The Composition Is Different
Because cats are obligate carnivores, they must consist primarily of meat. By contrast, dogs are evolved to handle moderate amounts of grain and vegetables. It’s pretty likely that this difference makes cat food taste tastier to dogs, since it contains more protein.
Is This Something To Worry About?
Unfortunately, yes. Aside from any overeating concerns you may have, dogs have different nutritional needs from cats. Subsisting on only cat food may cause all sorts of digestive problems, as the body receives too much of a certain type of substance and too little of others.
What Should You Do?
Just keep your cat food out of reach of your dog. Store it in cabinets high above the kitchen counter, and feed your cat separate, regular meals. It’s not very hard, since you can feed your cats where your dogs can reach. That’s all you have to do!
