Dogs love being outdoors, and hikes are a great chance to let them get some exercise in while giving them a chance to explore the world beyond their home. But is it safe?
Hiking, like all other activities, can pose some dangers. But as a responsible pet owner, you can do what is needed to make hiking safer and doable for your dog.
To begin with, consider what you know about your dog. Are they small or large? This will determine how far they can hike. Are they in good health and without injuries? If not, hiking may not be the best option for them. Are they in shape? If not, they may need less intense exercise options first. What’s their fur like? Long-coated dogs may overheat quickly, depending on the weather.
Prior to going on a hike, make sure you trim your dog’s nails so that they do not cause pain for your dog during the long walk ahead. Bring along some water and a drinking bowl for your dog and make sure their ID is up-to-date in case they run off or get lost.
Then, do some research about the area you want to hike in. What are the rules for dogs there? Are they poisonous or venomous animals in the area, or any kind of predator? Are there sharp rocks, or is the terrain very rough?
Once you’ve considered all these things and taken the necessary precautions, you can bring your dog along on a hike! Stay safe out there!
