Choosing The Right Dog Breed For Your Kids

Choosing The Right Dog Breed For Your Kids

When you have children, you have to consider the breed before getting a dog. It’s important that the breed is good with children, but not everyone shares the same opinion. Some behavior consultants believe the breed shouldn’t be the main concern.

Well, we’ll just let you decide:

The best dog breeds for children

There isn’t a “perfect dog breed” for children. It depends mainly on the dog’s training and individual personality. When they are young, they are like sponges and soak up everything around them. Therefore, it’s your job as a parent to ensure there are positive interactions that promote positive behavior.

With that being said, some dog breeds possess characteristics that make them ideal for families with children. For example:

  • Golden Retrievers
  • Pugs
  • Collies
  • Labradors
  • Newfoundlands
  • Wheaten Terriers
  • Beagles
  • French Bulldogs
  • Bernese Mountain Dogs

Note that does not mean all dogs of these breeds will fit into your family seamlessly, nor are they the only ones ideal for children. You will have to gain a sense of the dog’s temperament and personality from the breeder or shelter.

Personality Traits To Look Out For

Some personality traits that will improve the chances of the dog fitting into your family include:

  • Playfulness
  • Great sense of adventure
  • Gentle and careful
  • Friendly
  • Eager
  • Active

You should also consider your children’s personalities. For example, if your kid is anxious and less outgoing, a low-energy dog is a better option.

Training different dog breeds

You can train your dog to ensure there are better interactions between him/her and your child/children. If you need help, your vet should be able to suggest a trainer. This will help with socialization, bite inhibition, and gentleness.
