A couple in Guilford County, North Carolina, recently rescued four puppies from a zipped-up suitcase abandoned on the side of the road. The couple were going about their business when they noticed the moving suitcase and stopped to investigate.
The couple was shocked when they unzipped the suitcase and discovered that four puppies were crammed inside and left to die. In a post shared on Facebook, Guilford County Animal Services said the suitcase was "zippered except for one small part."
The puppies, nicknamed the "suitcase sisters", were taken to the shelter for medical evaluation. They were around ten weeks old when the couple rescued them. Thankfully, they were in good health but were "very under-socialized." As a result, they required "special attention and affection" compared to most puppies.
Shelter staff decided there were no better names for them but luggage-related names, so the pups were named Samsonite, Tumi, Carion (as in, "carry on") and Stowaway.
The shelter recently shared some good news about the suitcase sisters in a follow-up post on Facebook. They wrote: "UPDATE: All of the 'suitcase sisters' have been fostered-to-adopt just waiting on their spay next week before their adoption is finalized. Thank you everyone who shared and cared about these baby girls. They all have found amazing homes and two sisters were adopted together!"
The identity of the person who dumped the dogs in the suitcase remains unknown to this day.
