Rollo the Labrador loves food more than virtually everything else, and he will go to ridiculous and seemingly impossible lengths to get it. That’s why Sue Kirk, 51, and Stewart Maher, 47, have spent a whopping £25,000 (around US$32,722) to dog-proof their kitchen!
Rollo, who is 9 years old, has learned how to open the fridge, cupboards, and drawers, all on his own, in his Sleaford, Lincolnshire home. He also recently figured out how to get the dishwasher open. At first, Mom and Dad tried to laugh it off – but then he really started going wild. He’s eaten absolutely everything he possibly can, including:
- Visitors’ lunches (which he got by opening a briefcase)
- All the tomatoes in the greenhouse
- 12 cauliflowers in the garden
- An entire tree’s worth of apples
- An entire pack of yogurt (which he can peel the lids away from)
- Toast that he took out of the toaster
- Eight bags of spinach
- 12 muffins (chocolate ones – yikes!)
- Christmas cakes (five of them)
- An entire Easter egg (packaging too)
- A jar of mincemeat (yes, including the jar itself!)
- A box of cigarettes
- Rat poison
Rollo was adopted by the family six years ago, after the pup had already been sent back thrice due to his food obsession. Apples are his absolute favorite, and he shakes the tree outside until all the apples drop, so his family never gets a single bite! He’ll bust through most conventional obstacles for any kind of treat.
Now, the family has a foolproof kitchen. All handles of cupboards are made so Rollo can’t manage to wrench them open. All the fridges have pull-handled that are high up. The greenhouse is protected with a child safety gate.
So far, these methods have worked well. Rollo still grabs apples from the tree outside, but at least he isn’t ruining lunches and dinners and destroying his Mom’s plants! It also carries the most significant gift of all – no more ridiculously expensive vet visits to save his life after he eats something dangerous for him, and no more life-threatening scares!
