Soy sauce is a yummy condiment that many humans enjoy. But it’s not something that dogs can enjoy!
You see, just one tablespoon of the stuff holds 1,000 milligrams of sodium, and that much of it can be toxic to dogs – so much so that even a teaspoon of soy sauce can cause serious medical issues in many dogs.
Salt poisoning and kidney failure are both concerns that can arise from soy sauce consumption for dogs. Here are the symptoms of salt poisoning:
- Neurological issues
- Increased urination
- Tremors
- Vomiting
- High amounts of thirst
- Diarrhea
- Seizures
Symptoms of kidney failure include:
- Salt poisoning
- Mouth ulcers
- Listlessness
- Blood in urine
- Stumbling
- Lack of appetite
Kidney failure treatment is crucial to prevent fatalities. A vet may prescribe regular monitoring, dialysis, medication, diet changes, or intravenous fluids, depending on severity.
Some types of soy sauce may also contain onions or garlic, both of which are highly toxic to dogs when consumed in big amounts. Symptoms of poisoning from garlic or onion are:
- Exercise intolerance
- Vomiting
- Weakness
- Drooling
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
Untreated toxicity from these vegetables can cause heart damage, anemia, organ failure, and fatalities.
If you think your dog has eaten soy sauce, bring them to a vet for further assistance.
