Senior dogs are more susceptible to a variety of different issues as the seasons change. As a dog Mom or Dad, it’s your responsibility to make sure that they are well cared-for. What health problems should you be on the lookout for, and what can you do about them?
Spring and Summer
1. Allergies
Though they can occur year round, most seasonal allergies crop up around spring. Make sure your dog eats enough omega-3 fatty acids to lower inflammation.
2. Ticks and Fleas
In warmer weather, these pests run rampant. Make sure your dog is up-to-date on preventative care to prevent serious disease transmission.
Autumn and Winter
The main conditions that act up during these colder months are joint-related. Arthritis, hip dysplasia, and general joint pain can get worse in these seasons. Talk to your vet about medication options.
Year-Round
1. Heart Disease
Senior dogs with heart disease need proper medications to survive. Balance your dog’s diet and weight to reduce risk.
2. Kidney Disease
Sadly, this condition is not reversible, but early detection can help elongate your dog’s life with proper treatment.
3. Hypothyroidism
Synthetic thyroid hormones are necessary to treat this condition.
4. Blindness
Older dogs are more likely to develop cataracts and vision problems.
5. Deafness
Senior dogs can suffer hearing loss due to age.
6. Dental and gum disease
Make sure you prioritize your dog’s dental hygiene; disease can lead to dangerous infections.
7. Diabetes
Keep your dog on a healthy diet!
8. Cognitive decline
Just like humans, dogs can experience degenerative cognitive conditions.
9. Incontinence
As your dog ages, they may have trouble controlling their bowel movements.
10. Cancer
Cancer risk increases with age. Make sure your dog has regular vet checkups to detect it early.
