Do Dogs Know That Toys Are Toys?

Have you ever come home to find your precious furball viciously attacking his favorite toy and wondered what on earth is going through his mind?

Well consider this, it could very well be that it’s time for a new toy, and your precious pooch is trying to get the message over to you in the only way that he knows how.

Our canine companions seem to have a complex relationship with their toys, much like humans actually, and often times prefer to be out with the old and in with the new. Attracted to noise, texture, and exciting smells, the appearance of a new toy will most certainly outweigh that beat-up old plush elephant with its innards now as outards, at least for a while.

Perhaps the most challenging aspect of the toy business is getting through to your favorite pal exactly what can be considered his toy and what can’t. Puppies, for example, don’t seem to have much respect for chewable objects and cannot seemingly differentiate between that much-prized cashmere sweater and the ol’ oil rag left on the coffee table.

The best way to show your furry friend what you want him to play with is to spend time with him and the toy. By doing this, he will associate the joy of playing in the company of his favorite human being with the smell and texture of what is in front of him. Be it a fancy toy or even an old sock, to your beloved hound, it is the experience that counts the most. If you approach playtime like this, hopefully, that cashmere sweater and other inanimate objects will lose their appeal and the fun times keep rolling!
