If you have ever wondered why your dog looks over at you while they are taking a poop, read on. We humans have come to believe that those kinds of moments are supposed to be private.
Would you ever make eye contact with someone while sitting on the toilet? For dogs, it is a completely different story. Think about it. Dogs are in tune with their environment, they have super hearing and an excellent sense of smell. For their own survival, they have to be alert at all times. Whey you are defecating, you are really quite vulnerable.
The posture the dog takes when they poop is not really a great position to be in if they have to run away fast. Dogs realize that when they are defecating, they are at risk. So, what do they do? They look to their ‘leader’ for clues about how things are in the nearby area. If they see you start to panic, they know things are not good and can prepare themselves to flee too!
There are some dogs who will not ‘do their business’ if someone is around or if they are on a least. These dogs may feel safer when they are alone. Dogs are not human, but they do understand more than we give them credit for sometimes. So, the next time you see your dog staring at you while pooping, be happy, they are looking at you because they trust you!
