Puppies are curious creatures, and they often investigate things with their mouths. They chew on things, eat things, and lick things that they probably aren’t supposed to. They do this even more when they’re bored or anxious.
The trouble is that most of these behaviors can result in an upset stomach at best and a stomach blockage at worse. Larger items ingested can cause severe intestinal blocks and even lead to internal bleeding and damage. Symptoms of this serious problem include:
- Blood in urine
- Blood in feces
- Vomiting
- Lack of energy
- Difficulty using the bathroom
- Loss of weight
If you spot any of these symptoms, you should bring your dog to the vet immediately. Here are some tips to keeping your dog safe from eating what they shouldn’t:
- Keep Dangerous Things Out Of Reach. Medications, cleaning products, and tempting chewable items away from where your dog may be able to reach them.
- Keep Them Entertained. Make sure your dog gets enough exercise so they don’t feel bored or tired.
- Know What Human Foods Are Toxic. Do your research and keep toxic foods far away from anywhere your dog can get to.
- Do keep in mind that illnesses can also cause upset tummies, especially in young puppies. Take note of serious symptoms and speak to a vet if you notice anything questionable.
