Dog Parent Issues Alert After Her French Bulldog Experienced Fatal Heatstroke

As a dog owner, you might sometimes risk overlooking the dangers that the heat may pose to your dogs. If you have pets, especially French Bulldogs, you have to be aware of how to keep your pets safe in the summer.

Laura Kyle is now warning all Frenchie owners to be aware of the dangers after she lost her own dog to a heatstroke. Laura lives in Scotland and was the mother of a rescue Frenchie named Betty. One day, she took her on a 20-minute walk, and Betty seemed to be happy and healthy while playing around with other dogs.

When they got home, Laura gave Betty some water to cool down, but that’s when she noticed something was wrong. The dog was becoming limp. She didn’t know what to do, so she wrapped Betty in a wet towel. She took her to a vet as soon as possible, but it was too late. The dog had already suffered a heatstroke, and she had severe brain damage as a result. Unfortunately, she had to be euthanized.

French Bulldogs can be more susceptible to heatstroke, as they can experience brachycephalic airway syndrome. This means they have more difficulties cooling themselves down. Therefore, they shouldn’t be taken for walks in direct sunlight. If your dog shows signs of heatstroke, such as heavy panting, vomiting, or drowsiness, immediately contact a vet. If you want to be sure you keep them cool during the summer, put ice cubes in their water bowls, allow them to cool off in a pool or lake, and make sure you always bring plenty of water on walks.
