Although cancer is a broad term that describes different conditions, the word often frightens us whenever it is mentioned. Dogs can suffer from different types of cancer, and it is important to know at least the common ones, their symptoms, and treatments.
Cancer occurs when there is a mutation in how the body divides its cells. The abnormal cells created during the mutation invade certain organs and disrupt their normal function. Several organs in the body can be affected by cancer. The common ones in dogs include:
Lymphoma
This cancer affects the lymph nodes, spleen, and bone marrow. In some cases, dogs may suffer multicentric lymphoma, where multiple lymph nodes are affected.
Osteosarcoma
This is a bone cancer that begins in the cells that form bones. It may spread to other body parts, causing further havoc.
Mast Cell Tumors (MCTs)
This is the most common type of skin tumor found in dogs. They can affect other areas of the body, including the spleen, liver, and bone marrow.
Hemangiosarcoma
This cancer affects blood vessels and can affect different body parts, including the heart and liver.
Different symptoms can signal a dog is suffering from cancer. However, the most common symptom is skin tumors. Other symptoms include a cough, weight loss, lethargy, etc.
Your vet will discuss the best treatment options with you if your dog is diagnosed with cancer. Depending on the type of cancer, the treatment options may include chemotherapy, surgery, or both.
