Did you know that more than half of all dogs in America are too heavy? That’s right – 54% of them are overweight.
Even just a few extra pounds can drastically increase your dog’s risk of a wide range of different health conditions. The added weight often creeps up on you slowly, hidden in extra treats and a few bits of kibble too many, and before you know it, your dog’s obese.
Dog food labels are often misleading
The recommended amounts are highly general and don’t consider your dog’s particular age or level of physical activity, thinking only of size. Plus, a ton of these brands provide conflicting information.
Feeding your dog too much is a serious problem
If you’re doing this, you need to start cutting down on the amount you give them. Start by cutting just 10% of their meal, then monitor their weight. If within two weeks, they aren’t losing weight, cut off some more. Make sure you’re doing this gradually, though!
Studies have found that lowering the amount of food your dog eats can actually lengthen their lifespan. Just reducing their food intake by 25% can boost their life by a whopping 2 years! That’s a pretty good reason to manage your dog’s food intake and make sure they get enough exercise!
