Find Out Why Dogs Get Stolen And How Can You Protect Them

It’s not uncommon for dogs to be stolen, sometimes to be sold by thieves, sometimes to be used in breeding mills, and, unfortunately, sometimes to be used in dogfighting rings. It’s a frightening concept to any dog parent.

Here’s what you need to know:

Prevention

To prevent dog theft, you should do the following:

  • Make sure your dog’s ID is up to date and always worn on their collar, and have them microchipped if possible
  • Don’t brag about your dog’s breed; some thieves seek out purebred dogs or specific breeds of dogs
  • Spay or neuter your dog so they cannot be used in puppy mills
  • Always have an idea of where your dog is at all times
  • Change up your routine regularly so you aren’t too predictable
  • Use a pet tracker so you know where your dog is if they go missing

What To Do If Dog Theft Happens

If your dog is missing and you suspect they have been stolen, you should do the following:

  • Immediately contact animal control or the police; check on your case persistently
  • Print “missing dog” posters that show your dog’s photo, name, breed, color, markings, place last seen, and that they need medical attention; paste these posters with your contact number around the neighborhood and especially on community boards or at shelters
  • Walk around the neighborhood at varying times of the day and call for your dog
  • If you think you’ve found your dog, contact the police or animal control immediately
