Did you get your flu shot this year? Some people did get the shot and still got the flu! Flu season is upon us, and it is a nasty one this year!
But, if you have the flu and are taking medications, it is important that you clean them up, so your pets don’t get into them. Veterinarians are now warning people that some cough and cold medicines could be fatal to cats and dogs. Kate Webb, practice manage at Avondale Vets, says that people need to keep all tinctures, tablets, and pills away from pets.
Things like ibuprofen, codeine, aspirin, paracetamol and even children’s medications can cause serious problems if ingested by animals. Kate suggests that you think of all human medications as being poisonous to pets – unless you were told by your vet it was okay for them to take. Painkillers may cause loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, intestinal problems, and kidney or liver failure in dogs and cats. Cats tend to be more susceptible to harm than dogs.
So, you have to think of all medications as dangerous to pets and to children. Just like you wouldn’t let a toddler have access to your medications, you can’t let your dog or cat have them either! Make sure your pets can’t see or get to any drugs that you may have or be taking. If you are ever worried that your pet is ill, the best thing is to have them seen by a veterinarian. The key is prevention.
