Congratulations on adopting your new puppy. Welcome to the club! You might be intimidated at first because there are some growing pains, but you are not alone. Preparation is key, and when you are properly prepared, at least 50% of the job is done.
Expectations
Let’s start with mental preparation. Puppies tend to act according to their personality in a new situation. Some sleep, others cry, and some might be super hyper. It all depends and doesn’t necessarily mean you are doing something wrong. It’s not yet time to have people over, and you should be giving your puppy time to decompress and get used to the surroundings.
You should expect a lot of peeing since puppies have small bladders. There will be accidents and you can avoid them by taking little trips outside to encourage proper toilet habits.
Checklist
Do you have everything you need? Let’s check. You’ll need supplies such as:
- Leash
- Harness
- poop bags
- chew toy
- ID tag
- food and water bowls
- Doggy bed
- Crate
- dog pen and gate
- puppy food
- pee pads.
You’ll want to start potty training right away. Set up your pen, put your pee pads down for accidents, and bring him/her outside occasionally to encourage going to the bathroom. You don’t want to let your puppy free roam just yet because there will be a ton of accidents. Offer treats every time your puppy uses the bathroom outside. If there are any rooms that are off-limits, shut the door or put up a gate.
During this time, you should be seeking a vet and a trainer if necessary. Stick to a routine and before you know it, you and your puppy will be in sync.
