In an unfortunate turn of events. DFDenise McCurrie, 51, learned that her emotional support dog was adopted while she was hospitalized. Even worse is the dog has a new name and is living with a new family.
McCurrie did not take this news well, since she has been taking care of her now 6-year old miniature Schnauzer who she called Roscoe since he was a puppy. She had been living alone, battling depression and anxiety since the 2008 housing market crash in 2008 and Roscoe was the light of her life.
On April 16, she dialed emergency services and asked them to care for Roscoe while she was in the hospital. The dog was brought to a shelter that is notorious for mismanagement, neglect, and misguided decisions to euthanize animals with treatable conditions. When she called in two weeks, she was told they would look into it, but in reality, the dog had been adopted on April 19 and given a new name. She was told she would not get her dog back.
Her life is now a nightmare and she cannot even bear to look at him on her screensaver. She has since gotten assistance from Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal who is appalled by how the situation was handled. According to the shelter, the dog had no ID or microchip and was transferred to a rescue partner and put up for adoption three days later, in violation of state law. They have since retained legal counsel.
According to the NYPD, the dog appeared to be in poor condition but Roscoe claims she was treating him for a chronic ear infection. The fight continues for Roscoe.
