Constipation refers to a difficulty to pass bowel movements, and though it can resolve on its own, it can also cause injury. Here are 12 ways to ease canine constipation.
- Supplements. Digestive enzymes, food supplements, and probiotics can all be used to help treat a dog’s constipation.
- Psyllium Seeds. Use these in powdered form to help attract water to your dog’s stools.
- Enema. An enema is a quick fix for constipation, but consult your vet first and make sure you know exactly what you’re doing.
- Pumpkin. Pumpkin is full of water and fiber, and it can help promote bowel movements. Canned pumpkin and pureed pumpkin are both good options.
- Massages. For dogs with chronic constipation, a massage can work wonders. Acupuncture and chiropractic techniques can also work. Don’t do these yourself, though; get a professional to do them!
- Mineral Oil. This oil provides lubrication to stools.
- Exercise. A healthy amount of physical activity reduces the risk of constipation.

- Aloe Ferox. This food supplement is a great cleanser for the body. Talk to a vet before use.
- Laxatives. Don’t use them without a vet’s okay!
- Bran. Wheat and oat brans are packed with fiber.
- Milk of Magnesia. This is a well-known constipation cure! Talk to a vet before giving it to your dog.
