Are you checking your dog’s food package labels? Here are 5 ingredients to avoid.
BHT or BHA
Butylated hydroxytoluene and butylated-hydroxyanisole are preservatives found in both human and dog foods, and they’re both dangerous for anyone who eats them. BHT is the more potent of the two, and it has been connected to cancer. BHA has been linked to kidney damage.
By Product
It’s the vagueness of this term that makes it unfavorable. This can refer to virtually any type of meat, specifically its internal remains excluding muscle. This can include tissues or organs that are diseases, as well as tumors.
Ethoxyquin
This very commonly used preservative is all over dog food, but it was originally designed for herbicides – and that tells you a lot about its safety! Vets have linked ethoxyquin to a variety of health problems in dogs, including organ damage, blindness, and cancer.
Corn Syrup or Corn
Lots of dog foods use corn syrup as a form of sugar to make dog food more enticing to your dog. Of course, this means that it can cause hyperactivity, weight gain, and diabetes, as a form of sugar. As for corn, it is a common low-quality filler used in dog foods.
Propylene Glycol
This ingredient, also found in antifreeze, is used to reduce moisture in dog food in order to curb the growth of bacteria. However, dogs need intestinal bacteria, and they also need that added moisture for digestion!
