Diabetes Insipidus
This very rare metabolic disorder changes the way their bodies use water. It can often cause the body to be unable to hold onto water, thus causing excessive urination and thirst.
Liver Disease
Older dogs are more at risk for this disease, which affects many standard bodily functions. Numerous symptoms, including added thirst, are common.
Hypophosphatemia
This condition refers to electrolyte disturbance and imbalance. This can cause a dog to drink a high amount of water due to a lack of potassium or excess of calcium.
Diabetes Mellitus
Overweight dogs often develop diabetes. Excessive thirst, urination, hunger, and weight changes can all point to this difficult condition.
Adrenal Problems
Adrenal hormone issues, often caused by Addison’s or Cushing’s disease, can lead to feelings of depression in dogs, alongside excessive thirst levels.
Kidney Disease
Kidneys are supposed to remove toxins from the blood, and when they fail, it can be deadly. One of the many symptoms is excessive thirst.
Medication
Some medications can make dogs more thirsty. Usually, after the medication cycle is finished, things will go back to normal.
