Grooming is an important part of dog upkeep and hygiene. Some dogs need very regular coat grooming every two months and some just need a nail trim or a bath every so often. A professional groomer is one of the easiest ways to get this done, but how do you choose a good one?
To start, ask other dog owners you know which groomers they use. You can even ask vet staff if they have any recommendations. Gather your list of groomers and call them to ask about costs, operation hours, and services offered. You can check out their reviews online or even ask for an interview or tour of their grooming facility. If you do this, consider:
- Atmosphere; is it calm or chaotic?
- Lighting; is it sufficient for delicate grooming?
- Cleanliness; does everything look hygienic?
- Requirements; are dogs required to have preventative care and vaccinations?
- Monitoring; will your dogs be watched carefully?
- Space; are the kennels large enough?
- Experience; how experienced are the groomers?
- Other dogs; are the other animals in the area calm, or do they seem distressed?
- Certifications; is the groomer qualified?
To prepare your dog for their grooming session, make sure they are used to being handled. You can also bring your dog to the grooming facility a few times before their appointment so that they can get used to the place.
