Is your dog a picky eater? Their interest in food may suddenly drop or change very easily, which can be quite a problem for you, especially since you need them to eat to get the nutrients they need! Here are some explanations as to why your dog has become a finicky eater.
Their Diet Has Been Suddenly Changed
For picky eaters, a sudden change in food type or taste can make them not want to eat. If you’re trying to change the food your dog eats, you should be doing so gradually by mixing in small amounts of the new food to their usual fare.
This also applies to new dogs that you’re just only bringing home. Ask their previous caretakers what food they used to eat and use that food first while making gradual changes.
It’s Too Hot
Some dogs eat less when it’s warmer. Sometimes, keeping your home cool can help. If not, this is not a serious cause for concern – once the weather cools down, your dog will eat more again.
They’re Getting Food Elsewhere
Your dog may not actually be a picky eater; they may be full from eating other kinds of food. Evaluate the amount of treats you give them and try to refrain from giving them table scraps.
You should also check to see if your dog has been rummaging through the trash and ask others living in the house if they’re feeding the dog more than they should!
