Unfortunately, toxic substances often find their way into many pet products. Most of the time, accidental contamination in the culprit, but there are some toxic substances that are so commonly used in production that they are used intentionally.
Here are 5 toxic substances to read the labels for in dog products:
1. Polyvinyl Chloride
Known simply as PVC, this brittle plastic polymer is mixed with plasticizers to make it more flexible. But the plasticizers are often toxic – and yet they’re used in dog toys and chews regularly!
2. Bisphenol A
More commonly called BPA, this synthetic organic compound is used in many types of resin and plastic, both for human and dog products. Food containers, toys, and other similar items may contain BPA, which leads to cognitive problems.
3. Formaldehyde
Famous for its use in embalming, this item is often used as a preservative for rawhide products, which are made from separated, bleached, and formaldehyde-preserved leather layers. It can cause damage to many different organs.
4. Lead
We already know how dangerous lead is for humans, but in dog toys, it’s not entirely regulated. Lead builds up in the body over time, leading to poisoning.
5. Mycotoxins
These compounds are produced when mold grows, and they often develop in food products that are not carefully sealed or stored. Exposure can lead to organ damage.
