If a birthday party is coming up, you might wonder if it’s possible to give your dog human cake. But even in small amounts, cake is undeniably bad for dogs.
There are little to no benefits for letting your dog consume cake at all. Even the fruit that may be on it isn’t nearly enough to justify the downsides to a cake’s contents.
Here are the main side effects of giving cake to your dogs:
Dental Hygiene
Even daily brushing cannot combat the regular consumption of high-sugar foods like cake. Bad breath and tooth rot may all occur, and bacterial infections may also find their way from the teeth into the bloodstream.
Sugar-Free Cake Doesn’t Work
If a cake doesn’t have sugar, it probably has a bunch of other artificial sweeteners – including, in all likelihood, xylitol, which is a common sweetener that is toxic to dogs.
Weight Gain
There is a lot of sugar and other components in cake. These can contribute to weight gain, potentially leading to obesity – and obesity in dogs opens up risks to a huge range of other diseases.
Ingredients
A huge number of different cake ingredients and toppings can be toxic to dogs. Raisins, grapes, nutmeg, chocolate, vanilla extract, coffee, candy, macadamia nuts, and many more common flavors could poison your dog.
