Training a dog keeps their minds sharp, reduces their boredom, encourages physical activity, and, most importantly, keeps them safe. But what commands should you be teaching your dog?
Here are three essential commands to add to your training regimen:
“Come”
The “come” command can ensure that your dog, should they escape, will not run off and be lost or get injured by vehicles or other animals.
“Sit”, “Stay”, or “Down”
These commands are absolutely crucial for when you need your dog to behave, especially around new people, young children, or other animals. It can also keep them safe and save their lives if you can’t physically get to them in time when they’re about to do something dangerous.
“Drop It”
Dogs are very curious beings and they like to pick up and try to eat all sorts of things. But some of these things are toxic for them. Teaching your dog to drop it can save their lives before they ingest something they aren’t supposed to.
If your dog still doesn’t know these commands, now’s the time to teach them! Here are some tips to make the training process smoother:
- Use positive reinforcement instead of punishment
- Expend energy before beginning
- Train daily at the same time
- Be consistent with commands and rewards
- Be patient and take a break when you need to
