Here's How To Make Your Dogs Comfortable During Car Rides

Does your dog have difficulty riding in cars? Here’s what you can do to change that.

Frightened Dogs

You need to work your way up slowly with scared dogs. Begin by having your car’s engine off and bring your dog around it. Make sure they are far away enough that they do not exhibit any signs of nervousness, fear, or stress.

Every time your dog glances in the direction of the car, give them a treat that they will love, or reward them with a game, affection, praise, or a clicker.

Move your dog closer and closer to the car every day until they can stand right next to it. Then bring them back to their original starting distance and have someone start the car. This distance is to prevent excess fear from your dog due to the new noise. Once again, reward and move closer every day.

Once your dog can stand next to the car while the engine is on, invite them inside. Feed them or give them treats in the car. Play games in the car. Scatter treats inside for your dog to sniff out. When you are finally ready to start driving with your dog in the car, begin with a very short drive up the street and slowly lengthen the travel time and distance. Remember to have rewards ready!

Motion Sick Dogs

Stress can cause motion sickness, so start by using the anti-fear training methods mentioned previously. Try to avoid sharp turns or sudden starts and stops. Don’t feed your dog before the drive, allowing an hour for food digestion.

Bring your dog driving often to get them used to the car’s movements, reducing the chances of car sickness. Leave the window open and have the air conditioning on, too. You can also put your dog in a crate on the floor to reduce movement. Ginger, Dramamine, and Thundershirts are all commonly used to help reduce car sickness.
