Here's How You Can Train Your Dog To Walk With A Leash

Does your dog pull on their leash a lot? Here’s how to train them to walk properly with it.

Choose A Walking Style

Your dog needs to be taught what kind of walking is allowed and what isn’t, and they need to learn how you’ll enforce that rule. Decide early how this is going to be done and stick to it.

Be consistent. Changing the rules around all the time will confuse and frustrate your dog – and likely make them give up following you.

Start In A Boring Place

If you start teaching your dog how to walk on a leash at the dog park, surrounded by toys, or in a public setting with lots of foot traffic, you’re going to have a very distracted or even excited dog.

This will make it more difficult for your dog to learn what you are trying to teach them.

Use A Front-Clipping Harness

It’s a bit of a “cheating” method, but using a harness like this grants you more control over your dog and helps you to easily correct bad behavior and keep them in line.

Make Sure You Have Treats On Hand

Treats are always useful for training. Keep them on hand as you teach your dog and reward them when they exhibit the behavior you like. Intersperse this with other forms of positive reinforcement, like praise.
