Glucosamine supplements have been shown to help relieve joint pain, treat arthritis, and improve quality of life. But can you give them to your dog? Here’s what to consider.
What Is Glucosamine?
Glucosamine hydrochloride is present naturally in the body. It is a kind of amino sugar that helps build and regrow cartilage. Glycosaminoglycan, known also as GAG, are polysaccharides found in connective tissue, and a supplement of glucosamine can help more GAG to be produced.
Should My Dog Take Glucosamine Supplements?
If your dog has:
- Joint pain
- Joint stiffness
- Slowed walking
- Slowed movement
- Gone through surgery
- A sudden disinterest in being active
They may benefit from a glucosamine supplement. Speak to your vet first before proceeding. It will take around 2 or 3 weeks before you see any change in your dog.
Dosage
Always follow dosage instructions for any medication. This usually differs by your dog’s body weight, but most supplements have dosage instructions clearly written on their labels. Do not change supplements if you don’t see improvements right away – it can take time!
Safety
Here are some tips to follow:
- Do not purchase supplements that use shark cartilage; they are environmentally unfriendly and don’t provide additional benefits
- If you administer supplements through treats, monitor calorie intake
- Do not use any human supplements, only canine-specific ones
