Here's What You Need To Do If Your Pup Was Diagnosed With Spondylosis

Spondylosis deformans is when the body tries to form a bony bridge between two vertebrae. Spondylosis is rather common is middle-aged and older dogs.

Sometimes, the veterinarian may find it when taking X-rays for a different reason. Some breeds, like Boxers, have a genetic predisposition to spondylosis. But it can happen in other types of dogs too. No one is quite sure what causes this bony bridge to form, but it may be the body’s reaction to inflammation or instability. The biggest thing, if your dog is diagnosed with spondylosis, is to make sure they are comfortable.

Being overweight puts extra stress on all the joints, so losing weight is very important. The best types of exercises for a dog with spondylosis are low-impact exercises like walking, swimming, or playing retrieval-type games. If your dog is in pain, your veterinarian may prescribe some NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Talk to your veterinarian. However, there are other things you can try too, like joint supplements. Joint supplements with glucosamine and chondroitin may help manage your pet’s pain.

But, the supplements are not going to fix or control the disorder completely, but they may help control pain when used with other medications. Joint supplements don’t always work well for everyone either, you may have to try a few to see which works best. If the disease and symptoms are severe, steroids may be called for, be sure to talk to your vet about the long-term implications of steroid use. You could also look into getting some physical therapy for your dog!
