Whenever you’re holding food, you can guarantee that your dog will want to have some of it. But a lot of what they beg for are human foods, and dogs can’t eat a lot of them! But what about foods that are healthy for humans – like almonds?
Almonds are great for heart health and luckily they’re not toxic to dogs. Do note, though, that other nuts are – so just stick to almonds! With that being said, there are some things you should know before feeding almonds to your pooch.
Seasoning
Many almonds come salted, with added sugar or xylitol, or with fancy coatings. In most cases, these are not safe for dogs. Xylitol is toxic to dogs, too much sugar or salt will harm their health, and most fancy coatings have dangerous ingredients
Choking
Dogs tend to gobble their food down, so smaller dogs may have trouble chewing almonds before swallowing them. This can prove to be a choking hazard for your tiny canine companions, so chop them up first into slices or slivers.
Calories
Almonds have a lot of calories for a dog. One little ounce of these nuts has 130 calories, which is a few too many in terms of treats. They’re okay for a rare snack, but don’t overdo it!
So yes, you can give almonds to your dogs – just cut them small if you have to, avoid extra sugar, sweeteners, or salt, and do it all in balance.
