Here's Why Our Dogs Foam At The Mouth!

Seeing a dog foam at the mouth is not a particularly pretty sight. We often get frightened and find our minds going to the worst-case scenario… RABIES!

But research shows that there are in fact, a few reasons why dogs may foam at the mouth, and some of them are completely harmless!

  • Physical activity: when dogs run and play, the combination of excess drool and heaving breathing may cause a foam like appearance.
  • Stress or anxiety: if your dog feels uneasy and finds himself in a rather stressful situation, excess drool is triggered by the body as a stress response. When your dog calms down again, it will most likely clear up in no time.
  • Illnesses: upset stomachs and digestive issues can lead to a foaming appearance at the mouth. These illnesses can also cause a bad taste in your dog’s mouth, and excess drool is the body’s response to try get rid of it. If you notice excess drool or foam coupled with erratic behavior or seizures, then there is a possibility of it being rabies. You should then seek immediate medical help for your dog!
  • Dental issues: poor mouth and gum hygiene could be the cause for excess drool forming around your dog’s mouth!
  • Poisons: if your dog has ingested a type of poison or toxic ingredient, he may start foaming at the mouth. This requires urgent vet care!
  • Trouble swallowing: if your dog has a mouthful of toys, he may not swallow properly at the time, leading to excess drool. On a more serious note, if something is stuck in your canine companion’s throat or mouth, this may also be a cause of trouble swallowing and needs urgent care!
