Does your dog seem to be constantly hungry, even right after just ate? They may have a case of the “hungries”. But what causes this type of behavior?
Health Problems
Diabetes, Cushing’s disease, and hyperthyroidism can all caused increased or more frequent hunger. There are other diseases that also increase appetite, but they all share one thing in common – they step from a dog’s inability to properly absorb nutrients, leaving them hungry.
Bacterial Overgrowth
There are more bacteria in your intestines than anywhere else in your body, mostly, but there’s such a thing as too much. Overgrowth of certain gut bacteria can affect a dog’s appetite, leading to increased hunger. Probiotic supplements or foods containing probiotics can help prevent this from happening.
Nutrition
If a dog is eating a lot of empty calories and lacking certain vitamins, minerals, or dietary components, this could manifest as hunger. Even though their stomachs are full, their nutritional needs are not. Very processed dog foods can be very bad for this.
Bad Food
You need to feed your dog good food in order to help a dog regulate their diet. Healthy meals will ensure that they feel satisfied after eating, preventing them from getting hungrier and demanding more food.
