Do you ever notice that your dog likes to follow you when you go to the bathroom? Have you ever wondered why that happens? Vets have the answer!
Dogs often consider their Moms and Dads their pack. This means that they don’t want to be alone without them, and they know that bathroom trips can take a while. So they follow you and stare at you to remove feelings of vulnerability from themselves and from you.
Of course, dogs are also naturally very curious. As such, the sight of you slipping into a room that they can’t follow you to since the door is always closed can just entice them. So once they get the chance, they try to slip right in.
Finally, dogs just don’t have the same concept of privacy that humans do. As pack animals, they virtually do and share everything. To them, resource protection requires that everyone is together as often as possible, and that’s just what they’re doing by following you into the bathroom!
Don’t like your dog following you? Give them a bit of a distraction! Toss them a puzzle toy or something similar before you head onto the porcelain throne to keep your dog occupied while you’re busy.
